cannons

The best of nights settle into memory. Dreamlike before they were even over. March 31st at the Arizona Financial Theater became one of those nights. Seeing Cannons again was returning to a familiar atmosphere. One I had carried with me since the last time they headlined Viva Phoenix Festival at The Van Buren. There was a sense of nostalgia before they even approached the stage. What unfolded inside the theater surpassed memory. They always make moments feel cinematic and immersive. Cannons effortlessly lures you into the best euphoria dream state, and you don’t want to wake up.
The stage itself had been transformed setting the dreamscape tone. It resembled a quiet city street deep into the night. A street dimly lit for an hour when the world falls still. Where every sound softens by darkness. Though this painted imagery never felt lonely. It carried a euphoria that belonged to late-night drives, glowing windows, and thoughts that linger after midnight. A crescent moon hung suspended above the stage. Delicate and luminous. While a lone street lamp cast a wash of warm amber against cool silver light. Together, they created a setting that was like walking through a beautifully imagined memory.
From the opening moments of “Loving You,” the theater had already been pulled into their orbit. Cannons’ music has always possessed a hypnotic elegance. Something fully lush in synth. Paired with slow-burning rhythms, and melodies that drift. Live, that quality deepened. “Starlight” shimmered through the room with a celestial softness. Giving a glow that reflected in the stage design where sound and light had been stitched together.
Each song unfolded with seamless fluidity. “Hurricane” and “Carousel” moved gracefully. The songs carried the audience further into the nightscape the band had created. It may just be the sort of magic that Cannons effortlessly possess. There was an intimacy to the atmosphere despite the scale of the venue. “These Nights” and “Purple Sun,” the performance had fully settled into its euphoric rhythm. Cannons has always excelled at creating music that exists within nostalgia and fantasy. Live, those songs felt transportive. Every note carried the sensation of motion.
“Bad Dream” lifted to a beautiful cinematic quality that was visual within itself. Unfolding like scenes from a film steeped in memory. Of course, there was “Fire for You.” The room was met with a wave of recognition. Clearly a fan favorite, and it's apparent why. It’s a song that glows with familiarity. Made even more luminous beneath the crescent moon above the stage and the love from the crowd. Cannons always creates a dream suspended in sound. Seeing them again after Viva Phoenix was cherished, yes, but only did I discover that cherished time had grown even more vibrant witnessing their magic again.
